Many friends dream of starting a business together, but Debbie Neill and Jackie Sennish made that dream a reality. After taking a quilting class together back in 2004, these close friends of 30 years were drawn in by a new common hobby. Many discussions and prayers later, they decided to reach out to Brett Gerber in our Business Lending department, and on February 4, 2014, Debbie and Jackie opened the doors of M&E’s Quilt Shoppe under their “old lady” names of Mabel & Ethel.
Whether you’re a quilter or not, you’ll find this shop quite charming! Their motto is “Love my ME time,” and their intention is to make the shop a sanctuary for women (and some men). Mabel and Ethel promote the “ME time” philosophy by hosting classes and open sews throughout the year.
The building they lease was built back in 1884 and is located in historic downtown Sandusky at 279 E. Market St. In this 1,200 square foot shop, they carry 1,000 bolts of fabric in a variety of colors, patterns and fabrics. They’ll be expanding their wool selections later this year as wool appliques have become more popular and crafters don’t need a sewing machine.
The M&E Quilt Shoppe was featured in the 2016 Spring/Summer edition of the Quilt Sampler, a special interest publication from Better Homes and Gardens. They were included on a map of 11 shops to hop, and are a popular stop with quilters from all over the U.S. If you don’t have time to visit this unique shop in person, you can also order supplies and fabrics online at www.mequiltshoppe.com. They ship across the country and even have a few customers overseas!
Shop hours are from 10am-5pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Friday; noon to 5pm on Thursdays, and 10am-2pm on Saturdays. They are closed on Sundays and Mondays. You can reach Mabel and Ethel by calling 419-502-9123 or emailing them at ME@mequiltshoppe.com. Follow them on Facebook for creative ideas, sales, and fun videos and posts!
