Senior woman with Individual retirement account in Erie, Ohio

Individual Retirement Accounts are intended to help you prepare for a financially sound retirement. IRA contributions must be made by the federal income tax filing deadline to count for the previous year.

Generally, that is on or around April 15th, however, The Treasury Department and Internal Revenue Service have moved the 2019 federal income tax filing deadline from April 15, 2020 to July 15, 2020. This and other temporary changes regarding IRA distributions and contributions are a result of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act passed by Congress on March 27, 2020.
